ATTENDING MEETINGS IN A MALE-DOMINATED WORKPLACE
Like most women, I’m not a man. But as a working woman in a male-dominated environment, I’m surrounded by them.
The “sausage factory” mentality has permeated every industry, from government and tech companies to actual sausage factories. It’s crucial that everyone knows you’re not there just to serve coffee.
Here are my 8 favorite tricks for thriving in a male-dominated workplace:
- USE SPORTS METAPHORS
If there’s one thing men understand, it’s sports metaphors. If someone nailed a job, say it was a home run. If you’re going to the bathroom, say it’s par for the course. Using a metaphor is the best way to stay ahead of the curve and keep things moving forward.- GIVE GOOD HIGH FIVES
High-fiving is a key part of male congratulations in the workplace. A high five is appropriate in almost any situation—nailing that big pitch, getting free bagels in the break room, or even after washing your hands. Give a firm high five to assert your presence. Make sure no one is watching before you wince in pain.- LEARN HOW TO TALK ABOUT CARS
The men in your office will inevitably talk about cars, so it’s useful to learn the basics. Familiarize yourself with car-related topics to engage in these conversations.- NEVER MAKE A STATEMENT THAT SOUNDS LIKE A QUESTION, EVEN QUESTIONS
Many women inadvertently sound like they’re asking a question, even when they’re not. Avoid this by making everything you say sound like a confident statement. Your male counterparts might be intimidated by your confidence, but they will certainly respect you.- COMPLIMENT HIS SOCKS
Men have limited opportunities to express themselves fashion-wise: their socks. Focus on his socks and offer sincere compliments. Make him feel that the time he spends choosing socks is well spent.- WHEN ASKED TO DO SOMETHING BECAUSE “THEY NEED MORE WOMEN,” LAUGH IT OFF
If you’re asked to give a presentation or attend an event specifically because “they need more women,” laugh it off. It’s an insult to your worth as a professional. Save your frustrations for private conversations with friends and avoid showing your frustration in public.- PRANK EARLY, PRANK OFTEN
Cover his pen collection with glitter. Switch his regular coffee with decaf. Leave a voicemail in your boss’s voice saying his compensation will be reduced due to market fluctuations. Pranking might seem harsh, but it’s a way to fit in. Just remember to keep it light-hearted.- QUOTE THE BIG LEBOWSKI
Or Animal House. Or Rudy. Or Hoosiers. Or any other movie they frequently reference. Using familiar movie quotes can help you connect with your male colleagues and become part of the team.
