Before the Dawn a Novel By Emma Pass Book Summary
Part One: In 1943
the story starts in the quiet town of Bartonford, where 14-year-old Ruby Mottram learns about the start of the war. Initially, her life is mostly unchanged by the conflict spreading throughout Europe. Nevertheless, four years later, Ruby, who is now 18 years old and employed as a journalist for the nearby newspaper, observes a German aircraft accident close to her town. During the confusion, Ruby assists in guiding two US soldiers in evacuating civilians to safety before the aircraft’s explosives go off.
Sam Archer, one of the soldiers, has signed up for the U.S. Army by lying about his age without Ruby knowing. A romantic bond starts to form between Ruby and Sam. Nonetheless, the presence of American soldiers in Bartonford creates tension and cultural conflicts, particularly within Ruby’s household. Her father, especially, doesn’t approve of the Americans. While Ruby explores her deepening emotions for Sam, she must also deal with the pressures of society and her father’s disapproval.
Part Two: 1944
Witnessing the escalation of the war, British citizens face increased challenges, including rationing, air raids, and ongoing worry for family members in combat overseas. Despite the secrecy of Sam’s actual age and the uncertainties of war, Ruby and Sam’s relationship grows stronger.
Sam and his comrades get ready for the D-Day attack, and the impending departure burdens the pair. Ruby is conflicted between her feelings for Sam and her responsibilities to her sick father and controlling grandmother. The fear of Sam dying in the war weakens their connection further.
Part Three: In 1945
Sam participates in the D-Day landings and confronts the harsh truths of war. Despite being separated from his unit during the invasion, he perseveres through a daunting journey across the war-ravaged terrain of France. At the same time, Ruby waits nervously in England, worrying about the situation as days go by without any updates on Sam.
After the war comes to an end, people start celebrating, but Ruby does not feel any sense of relief. Receiving news that Sam is believed to be dead leaves her shattered. Feeling a great deal of sadness, Ruby hesitantly accepts Alfie Blythe’s proposal, looking for security and solace in her sorrow.
This compelling book delves into how war affects people, the strength of love and determination, and the individual struggles faced during worldwide turmoil. Ruby’s transition from naivety to adulthood serves as a heartfelt testament to the toll of war on humanity and the unwavering optimism that love offers, even during the bleakest moments.
