Without a Trace A Novel by Danielle Steel Book Summary
In the book Without a Trace by Danielle Steel, Charles Vincent, CEO of Jansen Plastics, faces a personal crisis as he struggles to balance a demanding career with a troubled marriage to Isabelle. His contemplation of his previous experiences in the publishing industry and the events that brought him to his current position prepared him for his journey of change.
On his way to a weekend party at the château, Charles’s life changes dramatically as his car swerves off the road and falls into the ocean. In an extraordinary getaway, he swims to security and finds a hidden cabin, where he encounters Aude, an artist who becomes his confidant and love interest.
As Charles and Aude grow closer, they reveal their past traumas, with Aude’s being the abusive ex-husband, Paul, who is now in jail for murder. In the meantime, Isabelle remains at the château, throwing a party without knowledge of her husband’s disappearance.
Authorities inform Isabelle of Charles’s presumed death when they find his belongings. After being surprised, she immediately begins to prioritize financial stability by planning her next moves, talking about Charles’s pension and insurance with her friends Stephanie and Jerome Jansen, the company’s owner.
Isabelle’s sorrow transforms into wrath as she blames Charles for not giving her enough money. Motivated to find a prosperous second spouse, she decides to resume her social activities, with Stephanie cheering her on. Aude becomes more worried as she finds dead animals on her doorstep, thinking that Paul has come back.
They both decide to depart from their cabin for their safety. Upon Charles’ arrival in Paris, he reunites with his children, Judith and Olivier, who are happy to learn he is alive. However, Isabelle is still concerned about the financial consequences.
As Isabelle starts the divorce process, she stays committed to keeping Charles’s money, while also seeing wealthy men. Aude is abducted by Paul, prompting Charles to seek assistance from his friend Armand and a private investigator, Robert Bercy, to find her. While in captivity, Aude suffers both physical and psychological mistreatment until she is saved by a SWAT team, resulting in a showdown that results in Paul’s death.
The divorce agreement is completed, giving Isabelle a large share of Charles’s belongings, as Charles and Aude anticipate a fresh start as a couple. They start a car repair shop with Armand, getting ready for Charles’s children to come to Paris, aiming to earn their approval for their relationship. In the end, Charles’s experience transitioning from a difficult situation to a state of revitalization showcases the importance of resilience, love, and the search for genuine identity in the face of challenges.
